Northwestern Falls in Series Finale at Arizona State

PHOENIX — Northwestern and Arizona State entered the eighth inning tied at 2-2, but the Sun Devils used a pair of two-run doubles in the frame to go ahead and take a 6-2 victory in the series finale.
Freshman Sam Lawrence worked the eighth inning and only allowed one hit, but was credited with the loss, while James Ryan tossed three-scoreless innings to pick up the victory for Arizona State.
Arizona State (3-0) outhit Northwestern (0-3) in the series finale by a 10-3 margin. Connor Lind, Grant Peikert and Nick Paciorek tallied the hits for NU. Lind and Peikert each picked up an RBI.
Northwestern struck first on Saturday afternoon when Lind singled up the middle to score Jack Dunn from second base in the top of the first. Dunn got into scoring position after drawing a walk and stealing second base. The Sun Devils answered in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 1-1 before weather forced the game to be delayed and eventually played on Sunday.
Lyle Lin put the Sun Devils in front right away on Sunday by tallying an RBI-single in the bottom half of the third inning.
In the top of the fourth inning, Paciorek singled and stole second base before Peikert took a pitch back up the middle to even the game at 2-2.
Zeroes populated the scoreboard for three consecutive innings until ASU scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Northwestern used eight pitchers in the effort, including Richard Fordon, who tallied a team-high two strikeouts.
The Wildcats will be back in action next weekend when they head to Nashville, Tenn., for the Mule Mix Classic, where they will face Middle Tennessee, Belmont and Lipscomb.
