'Cats Beat Northern Kentucky, Sweep Marquette in Saturday Doubleheader

3/1/2025 7:11:00 PM | Men's Tennis

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern men's tennis won both halves of a doubleheader on Saturday at Combe Tennis Center, beating Northern Kentucky 6-1 in the morning match before sweeping Marquette 7-0 to close out the day. The victories brought the 'Cats to an even 7-7 record at the end of the non-conference portion of their dual schedule.

The day started strong for the 'Cats, who picked up a pair of doubles victories against Northern Kentucky (0-6) to take the first lead of the match. Felix Nordby and Greyson Casey downed their opponents 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, then Saiprakash Goli and Chad Miller finished the task with a 6-4 win at the No. 2 spot.

Nordby continued his success in singles play, where he defeated Xavier Ecarma 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles to increase the Wildcat lead. First-year Vincent Yang improved to 3-0 in individual action next, taking down Arnau Puig Juanpere in straight sets (6-0, 6-3). Jackson Caldwell provided the clincher for Northwestern at the No. 5 spot with a 6-0, 6-2 win - his third of dual season as well. After the match had already been decided, Goli added on with a win at No. 1 singles, where he took down Emilio Bravo with a pair of 6-2 set wins.

In the evening match, Northwestern was even more dominant against Marquette (1-13). Once again, play started with the doubles point going to the 'Cats, as Miller teamed up with Nordby for a 6-1 win and Yang combined with Max Bengtsson for the second doubles victory.

The 'Cats didn't drop a single set in singles action against the Golden Eagles. Miller was perfect at No. 5 singles, where he won 6-0, 6-0. Caldwell (6-0, 6-4) and Nordby (6-2, 6-2) also made quick work of their matches to deliver Northwestern its second match victory of the day. Following the clinch, Bengtsson picked up an individual win at No. 4 singles (6-1, 6-2), Casey ended in the win column at No. 3 singles (6-1, 6-3) and Goli completed the sweep at the No. 1 spot, winning 6-2, 6-3.

Saturday's two-win day was the third doubleheader sweep of the season for head coach Arvid Swan's team, who also racked up two wins each on January 17, against Saint Joseph's and Louisville, and February 15, against Illinois State and IU Indy.

The 'Cats will return to action next weekend, when they're set to open Big Ten play at home against Wisconsin and Nebraska. The Wildcats will take on the Badgers at 6 p.m. CT next Friday, March 7, then host the Huskers at noon CT on Sunday.
