Northwestern improves to 4-0 at home in 2024
EVANSTON, Ill. (September 9, 2024) – Nigel Prince's goal in the 84th minute proved to be the difference as No. 9 Northwestern got back in the win column by defeating Marquette (3-2-1), 1-0, this evening at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium.
Tonight's victory sees the 'Cats improve to 5-1 on the year and a perfect 4-0 at home.
How It Happened
Joe Suchecki looked to put Northwestern in front inside five minutes, drilling his left-footed try off the side netting at the near post. Just under 20 minutes later, Italo Addimandi made a bid for the opener as he sent his headed effort from 12 yards out wide of goal.
With time fleeting fast in the first half, Northwestern nearly got on the board through the pairing of Brandon Clagette and Paul Son in the 43rd minute. After racing to chase down a ball on the right side, Clagette's cross into the box connected with an unmarked Son at the far post, who lifted his effort high of goal as the two sides headed to the intermission scoreless.
Marquette was presented with a golden opportunity of its own inside the first 90 seconds of the second stanza when Tim Smith turned inside the 18-yard box and fired narrowly high of the crossbar.
Making his first start of 2024, Fritz Volmar did his best to spark the Wildcat attack as the half wore on, registering a pair of attempts across a seven-minute span, the second of which saw him threaten the upper corner of goal from the edge of the box.
Northwestern cashed in off its fifth and final corner kick of the night in the 84th minute. Following an inswinging service from Collin McCamy, Prince elevated and headed off the crossbar and in from six yards out, setting off a wild celebration as Northwestern went on to close out a 1-0 triumph.
