Five Wildcats Pick Up Wins at Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, ILL – Northwestern won five individual bouts on Sunday afternoon at Illinois, headlined by victories from #1 Ryan Deakin, #18 Shayne Oster and Tyler Morland.
Wrestling as the consensus No. 1 wrestler at 157 lbs for a fifth-straight match, Deakin secured his fourth pin of the season, taking down Eric Barone in the third period to improve to a 13-0 on the year. The redshirt junior from Broomfield, Colo. has now earned bonus points in six of his eight dual victories this season.
Following Deakin, #18 Shayne Oster continued his strong run wrestling at 165 lbs this season, winning a 7-6 decision over #15 Danny Braunagel. Oster has now won three-straight matches and improves to 4-1 in Big Ten action, with his only setback coming to #1 Vincenzo Joseph of Penn State. Sunday's win marked Oster's second ranked victory of the season.
The Wildcats kept rolling at 174 lbs when redshirt sophomore Tyler Morland knocked off #22 Joey Gunther by a 2-0 decision for his first ranked victory of the season and his second-straight win in conference play. The win also marked Morland's second-career victory over Gunther, as he also defeated him by a 7-4 decision last season during the Big Ten championships.
Also picking up wins for the Wildcats on Sunday was Yahya Thomas and Lucas Davison. Thomas put NU on the board in the fourth bout of the afternoon with a 2-1 decision over Mousa Jodeh for his first Big Ten victory of the season. Thomas improves to 9-5 in his redshirt sophomore campaign.
At 197 lbs, Lucas Davison remained unbeaten in duals this season with a 5-0 victory over Matt Wroblewski. Davison has now won five-straight matches dating back to the start of the Big Ten season on January 10.
Northwestern dropped the dual to the Fighting Illini, 19-18. The Wildcats are now 3-5 in duals on the season.
The Wildcats will be back in action this Friday, February 7, when they welcome Michigan State to Welsh-Ryan Arena at 7 p.m. CT for their final home dual of the season. Senior day festivities will take place prior to the start of the match.
