Wildcats Sweep Fall NU Duals to Start Team Competition

GLENVIEW, Ill. – The Northwestern women's fencing team opened up the new season with the NU Fall Duals, sweeping the field on Saturday with a perfect 5-0 record.
The Wildcats recorded wins over Indiana, Chicago, Lawrence, Purdue and Wisconsin. The foil squad went 9-0 against all opponents and helped lead the team to success.
In their first Big Ten match up of the day, 'Cats faced Indiana and cruised through the round, 26-1. First-years Celia Crompton and Blodwen Bindas excelled as they posted clean sweeps in their first dual competition.
The Purple and White then fenced against UChicago. First-year Isabelle Banin impressed with a clean sweep in her collegiate debut. Epee fencers Julia Falinska and Emma Scala also went 3-0 against the Maroons.
Next, the #B1GCats faced off against Lawrence and overpowered them, 26-1. Sofia Simontov, Dhruthi Reddy and I. Banin won 3 bouts each while Zhesi Zhuang, Robyn Song, Shirley Luong, Doreen Du and Adelle Berdichevsky all went 2-0.
In another Big Ten match up, Northwestern defeated the Boilermakers, 24-3. First-year Julia Shalansky made her collegiate debut and recorded her first clean sweep against Purdue. Adelle Berdichevsky, Elina Moon and Simontov also posted perfect scores.
Northwestern closed out the day with a win over Wisconsin, blanking the Badgers, 27-0.
"Our team's energy and focus were really great this weekend," said head coach Zach Moss. "They did a fantastic job of competing as a unit, supporting each other and working on the competition skills that translate into long term success and consistency. This was a great start to the season and we're looking forward to building from here."
'Cats will be back on the strip next weekend in Milwaukee, Wis. at the November North American Cup.
