COLUMBUS, Ohio -- After the first night of competition at the 2010 Big Ten Championships, Northwestern is tied for sixth with Indiana and Iowa. The 10 conference teams competed in the 200 medley and 800 free relays on Wednesday night at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.

The Wildcats began the Big Ten Championships with an NCAA `B' time of 1:28.74 in the 200 medley relay to place seventh overall. Alex Tyler (Birmingham, Mich./Birmingham Groves), Nathan Butler (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin), Brian Kerr (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) and Sean Mathews (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) comprised the NU team.

Tyler got Northwestern out to a great start with a 22.48 split in the 50 back, the fourth fastest time in the race. With the Wildcats trailing later in the event, Kerr's 21.48 split in the 50 fly surpassed Indiana in the race, but the Hoosiers came back in the anchor leg to best NU by .03 of a second for sixth place.

NU then took seventh again in the 800 free relay, this time besting Indiana by .24 of a second for that spot. The team of Tyler, Mathews, Charlie Rimkus (Tustin, Calif./Beckman) and John Frutiger (Alma, Mich./Alma) dropped almost 11 full seconds from the Wildcats' seed time with an NCAA `B' time of 6:30.61.
