Men's Tennis Opens Big Ten Season With a Win

EVANSTON, Ill. - The No. 45 Northwestern men's tennis team rallied from second-set singles deficits to defeat No. 50 Purdue, 5-2, and open the Big Ten season with a win.
The Wildcats (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) lost the opening doubles point, as seniors Ryan Edlefsen and Joost Hol lost to the No. 23 doubles team of Scott Mayer and Dan Swan. This is the first dual match action Hol has seen since shoulder surgery in December.
Freshman Tommy Hanus and junior Josh Axler were the only NU doubles team to emerge victorious.
In singles action, Hanus, Axler and senior Jamie Sahara all finished off their opponents in straight sets. The win is Axler's 13th consecutive dual match victory.
Edlefsen, Jenkins and freshman Chuck Perrin all dropped the first singles set, then came from behind to win the second set. Edlefsen couldn't hang on and was defeated, but Perrin clinched the Wildcats' team victory with his own.
Jenkins' match was subject to a lengthy dispute in the third set, but he emerged with a service ace to defeat Derek Miller.
Northwestern tennis continues its celebration with a Sunday doubleheader. The women's team plays at 11 a.m., while the men take on No. 7 Notre Dame at 3 p.m.
