'Cats Welcome Blackhawks, Stanley Cup To Ryan Field Saturday

EVANSTON, Ill — Northwestern football will welcome the Chicago Blackhawks and the Stanley Cup to Ryan Field on Saturday, September 12, when the Wildcats host Eastern Illinois at Ryan Field at 3 p.m. CT. Chicago's Big Ten Team will honor the 2015 Stanley Cup Champions prior to kickoff.
Blackhawks chairman and Northwestern alumnus Rocky Wirtz , president & CEO John McDonough and executive vice president Jay Blunk will serve as honorary captains for the game, joining both teams and the officials at midfield for the coin toss, while Jim Cornelison will deliver his one-of-a-kind performance of The Star-Spangled Banner. The Stanley Cup last visited Ryan Field in 2010 after the Blackhawks won their first of three championships in the last six seasons.
Wirtz received a bachelor's degree from the School of Communication in 1975. He is a member of the Northwestern University Board of Trustees and the School of Communication's National Advisory Board. In 2014, Wirtz and his wife Marilyn endowed the Virginia Wadsworth Wirtz Center for the Performing Arts in the School of Communication, named after Wirtz's beloved grandmother, Virginia Wadsworth Wirtz, who graduated from Northwestern in 1924 and inspired him to attend Northwestern.
The Wirtzes also have supported the Virginia Wadsworth Wirtz Visiting Artist Program, which brings talented and successful performing arts professionals to campus to work with Northwestern students and faculty. The couple are also among the benefactors who will be recognized September 24 at the dedication of the Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Center for the Musical Arts.
