2013 NCAA Midwest Regional Championships -- Meet Info
EVANSTON -- After two weeks of final preparations, Northwestern is ready to compete at the 2013 NCAA Division I Midwest Regional Cross Country Championships Friday afternoon in Ames, Iowa. Iowa State University is serving as host of the annual event for the first time since 1997.
The women's 6K championship race is slated to begin at 1:15 p.m. following the completion of the men's 8K event, which sets off at noon. Admission at the Iowa State Cross Country Course is free for all fans.
Once again fielding a young lineup, the Wildcats contingent includes six underclassmen (two sophomores, four freshmen) accompanying two seniors in Julia Buford and Libby Kocha.
The group will go up against a formidable field of competing squads that draws from 13 collegiate conferences and nine different states. The top two teams and top four individuals not on an advancing team move on to the NCAA National Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. Additional teams and individuals may be chosen through an at-large selection process following the regional competition.
Host Iowa State is the highest-ranked team competing at the event, standing No. 7 nationally and No. 1 in the Midwest Region. Minnesota, Oklahoma State, Tulsa and Southern Illinois round out the top 5 in the region entering Friday's race.
Two weeks ago, freshman Andrea Ostenso paced the Wildcats at the Big Ten Championships hosted by Purdue, recording a 6K time of 22:03.5. Sophomore Camille Blackman (22:22.3) and senior Libby Kocha (22:32.0) also scored points that day for NU and on Friday will be aiming to help Northwestern match its fourth-place regional finish of a year ago.
