EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern head coach April Likhite was inducted this weekend into Green Bay Preble High School's Athletic Hall of Fame as part of the school's inaugural induction class. Likhite was a four-time all-state cross country honoree during her career and won a state championship in the 3,200-meter track race in 1989.
Likhite was one of 10 inductees in the school's inaugural class, which was recognized during halftime of Preble's Friday night football game as well as in a postgame ceremony.
"I feel honored to be part of Preble High School's inaugural Hall of Fame class and am grateful to the selection committee for honoring me with this recognition," Likhite said. "The experience was extremely memorable for my parents, my family and me. It was particularly special to be inducted alongside my high school cross country coach, Jack Drankoff. He forever impacted my life the day he convinced me to go out for cross country and, along with my family, provided me with endless guidance and encouragement in cross country and track. I was fortunate to be part of such a supportive and reputable athletic department at Preble which contributed to much of my success in my high school career and in life."
Following her career at Preble, Likhite attended Mississippi State University where she continues to hold records in the indoor and outdoor 5,000-meter events as well as the 3,000-meter. An Academic All-American, Likhite was honored as the top student-athlete at Mississippi State three straight years.
In 2007, Likhite began her second stint as head coach at Northwestern after helping NU reinstate its cross country program from 1998-2001 after a 10-year absence. Likhite's 2010 squad began its season last week with a team victory at the Badger Cross Country Classic in Wisconsin.
