    2012 Northwestern Cross Country Schedule

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Coming off a 2011 season in which it ran to its best Big Ten and NCAA Regional Championship finishes in nearly a decade, Northwestern on Monday released its competition schedule for the upcoming 2012 campaign. The season gets underway on Friday, Sept. 7, when the Wildcats make the short trip to DeKalb, Ill., to run in the Huskie Open.

Head coach April Likhite, who is entering her ninth overall season in charge of the 'Cats, is excited about the challenging schedule that lies in front of her talented group of returners.

"The past few years have been about building and believing in our potential to be a nationally competitive program, and with that in mind we truly finished the 2011 season on a high and inspiring note," Likhite said. "Five of our seven runners from last year's Midwest Regional squad are returning in 2012 and we look forward to the addition of a very talented freshman class. Preseason camp is right around the corner and we are ready to begin working toward our goals."

After competing at the Huskie Open -- a meet in which the Wildcats posted a first-place team finish in 2011 -- Northwestern will head to East Lansing on Sept. 14 for the Spartan Invitational. In doing so, NU will gain experience on the course that will host the 2012 Big Ten Championships, which this year is set for Sunday, Oct. 28.

Northwestern will split its squad for its third week of competition, sending representatives to the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday, Sept. 28, before also competing locally at the Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational in Chicago on Sept. 29.

The team again divides up on Oct. 12 when runners head to Wisconsin's Adidas Invitational in Madison as well as the Bradley Classic in Peoria, Ill., in NU's final tune-up before the Big Ten Championships later that month.

Championship season continues for the Wildcats with the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships, hosted this season by Missouri State in Springfield, Mo. A year ago, Northwestern ran to a fifth-place team finish at the regional competition, with both Audrey Huth and Lexie Goldsmith placing in the top 25 to earn All-Midwest Region honors.

Huth and Goldsmith are among the five returning members of NU's NCAA Regional roster from a year ago, joining junior Ann Powers, senior Ashley Greenwell and fifth-year senior Sophie Ewald.
