EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern head coach April Likhite announced today (Monday) the addition of a sixth member of her incoming 2013 freshman recruiting class. Ellen Patterson, a native of Portland, Ore., and a four-year cross country letterwinner at St. Mary's Academy, will join the Wildcats this fall.
"We are thrilled to add Ellen to our 2013 recruiting class," Likhite said. "Ellen's strong character will not only bring her much success as a Wildcat and beyond, but it will be a tremendous addition to our overall team dynamics."
Patterson's cross country career at St. Mary's included a 10th-place state finish in her senior campaign and a 15th-place effort in 2010. She was named her team's most outstanding performer in three different seasons and recorded a career-best 5K time of 18:03, also competing twice at the annual Nike Border Clash. On the track, Patterson took 11th in the state in the 1,500-meter event during her junior season and owns career PRs of 4:44 in the 1,500, 2:22 in the 800 and 10:30 in the 3K.
Patterson, who plans to study biology at Northwestern, joins previously announced newcomers Elena Miller (Troy, Mich./Lahser), Andrea Ostenso (Ladysmith, Wis./Ladysmith), Jena Planin (Pleaseanton, Calif./Amador Valley), Hannah Rose (Staunton, Va./Wilson Memorial) and Ellen Schmitz (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) in Northwestern's class of 2017 contingent.
