SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Northwestern opened its season of winter quarter track competition Saturday as it joined a collection of top runners from across the Midwest at the Meyo Invitational hosted by Notre Dame.

The Wildcats made their presence felt in the distance events Saturday morning, beginning when freshman Andrea Ostenso took second place out of more than 30 runners in Section 2 of the 3,000-meter event. Ostenso cut eight seconds off of her 10:00 seed time, crossing in 9:52.9 and only one second behind winner Benadate Cheruiyot of Louisville.

Her fellow freshman Jena Pianin joined her below 10 minutes, taking fifth in 9:55.1. Sophomore Megan O'Brien also notched a top 20 showing in the 3K with her time of 10:17.3.

Northwestern also was represented in the 1-mile run by sophomore Rachel Weathered, who competed against a field of nearly 50 runners and took 13th with her time of 5:00.4, taking five seconds off her seed time for the event.
