2011 NCAA Midwest Regional Results
DeKALB, Ill. -- Northwestern cross country enjoyed one of its finest performances in recent history Saturday, claiming fifth place out of 28 teams at the 2011 NCAA Midwest Regional Championships hosted by Northern Illinois. It marks the Wildcats' highest finish at the regional meet since 2002 when NU placed second and advanced to the NCAA Championships.
NU finished with 204 total points to put them behind only Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Minnesota and Iowa, three of which are ranked in the top 30 nationally. The Wildcats clipped fellow Big Ten foe Nebraska by nine points on Saturday, returning the favor after finishing just 11 points behind the Huskers at the Big Ten Championships on Oct. 30.
Northwestern placed two runners on the Midwest All-Region team by virtue of their top-25 performances. Junior Audrey Huth earned the honor for the second straight year, finishing a difficult NIU North 40 Course in 16th position with a time of 21:32.6.
Sophomore Lexie Goldsmith receives the accolade for the first time by placing 24th overall in a time of 21:45.08. She helped Northwestern land multiple runners on the All-Region team for the first time since 2002.
Sophie Ewald recorded her best showing at the regional meet by placing 32nd in a time of 22:03 while Northwestern's fourth and fifth scorers came in the form of Molly Waterhouse and Ann Powers. The duo crossed the finish line nearly in step, placing 66th and 67th, respectively, with their time of 22:39.
Northwestern's Ashley Greenwell placed 75th in 22:43 while senior Rachel Kaminski finished her season with a time of 22:53.
The top two teams from each of nine Regional Championships sites earn automatic berths to compete in the NCAA national meet, with Iowa State and Oklahoma State securing those spots. At-large bids for both teams and individuals will be awarded on Sunday by the NCAA.
