DeKALB, Ill. -- Northwestern freshman Jena Pianin was the top overall female finisher at the NIU Huskie Open hosted by Northern Illinois Friday afternoon, posting a 5K time of 18:24.85 in the process.
Pianin led a group of four top-finishing Wildcats who were coming off appearances at last week's Big Ten Championships, with another freshman, Elena Miller checking in just behind Pianin in 18:25.34. Senior Julia Buford and sophomore Megan O'Brien, recorded efforts of 18:31.65 and 18:36.20, respectively, to place third and fourth among female finishers.
In all, Northwestern accounted for 10 of the top 11 female finishers in a field that featured 83 total participants.
The co-ed meet, which was open to a number of area colleges and universities as well as members of the community, marked a final tune-up for next week's NCAA Regional Championships meet for a handful of Wildcat runners and the end of the competitive fall season for others. No team scores were kept at the event.
