EAST LANSING, Mich. -- A pair of Michigan natives -- junior Michelle Moriset and senior Audrey Huth -- returned to their home state and posted top-25 finishes to lead Northwestern at the 2012 Big Ten Women's Cross Country Championships hosted by Michigan State. The Wildcats finished in seventh place in the team standings, matching its best finish at the conference meet since 2002.

"Our program has made incredible strides this year but we knew it would take five great races to achieve our goal of a top-5 finish this year," said head coach April Likhite. "While we fell short of that, Michelle Moriset did a great job of executing her race strategy to finish in the top 20 and Ann Powers ran an extremely gutsy race. We are looking forward to using the next two weeks to prepare in every way possible for the NCAA Regional meet."

Moriset posted her second sub-21-minute 6K time in as many races, crossing in 20:54 to finish 20th overall, while Huth took 25th in 21:01. Both runners slashed substantial time off their efforts at MSU's cross country course earlier this season, with Moriset taking more than 70 seconds off her time at the Spartan Invite back on Sept. 14.

Junior Ann Powers was next across the finish line for the 'Cats with a strong time of 21:19, good for 42nd overall, while senior Sophie Ewald was fourth for NU in 21:26. Junior Lexie Goldsmith rounded out the Wildcats' scoring on the day with a time of 21:30.

Northwestern finished with 185 points, 15 shy of sixth-place Ohio State. The Wildcats finished ahead of Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Purdue and Nebraska in the meet, which featured four teams ranked in the top 25 of the USTFCCCA national poll. Michigan clipped two-time defending Big Ten champ and host Michigan State to win the title with 55 team points.

The Wildcats are slated to compete at the Northern Illinois Open this Friday, Nov. 2, before continuing championship season at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships in Springfield, Mo., on Friday, Nov. 9.
