MADISON, Wis. -- Against one of the most nationally competitive pre-championship fields assembled this season, Northwestern placed 34th at the 2013 Wisconsin Adidas Invitational at the Thomas Zimmer Cross Country Course Saturday afternoon in Madison.

The elite competition featured 10 teams ranked in the top 20 nationally and nearly two-thirds of the entire USTFCCCA top 30 poll (18), including No. 1 Providence, No. 3 Arizona and No. 4 Washington. The meet will prompt some shuffling in the national polls this week after Arizona walked away with a team title, with Arkansas, Providence, Michigan State and Iowa State rounding out the top five on Saturday.

Leading the way in the standings for the Wildcats Saturday was senior Libby Kocha, whose 6K time of 21:20 represented an improvement of nearly a minute over her 6K performance at last month's Dartmouth Invitational. It was the first time this season that Kocha finished as NU's top place-winner.

It was a trio of freshmen next across the finish line for the Wildcats, beginning with Jena Pianin in a time of 21:44. Wisconsin native Andrea Ostenso crossed one second later for the 'Cats, while Elena Miller recorded her highest team finish of her rookie campaign in 21:53.

Senior Julia Buford (21:55) was the fifth and final scorer on the day for head coach April Likhite's squad, which finished just behind Georgia and Air Force in the team standings and ahead of Connecticut, Louisville and Yale.

In two weeks, the Wildcats varsity contingent will join the remainder of the Big Ten Conference at the 2013 Big Ten Championships hosted by Purdue (Nov. 3). Next Friday, Northwestern will send several representatives to the Illini Open in Champaign.
