MADISON, Wis. -- Northwestern junior Audrey Huth came within two seconds of matching her own 6K school record set last year, placing 22nd at Friday's Wisconsin adidas Invitational with a time of 20:37 at the Zimmer Cross Country Course.
Huth's season-best performance came against a field that included 16 teams ranked in the top 25 nationally and helped the Wildcats place 31st out of 44 squads with 664 points. The NU junior was the second runner out of the Big Ten across the finish line.
The Wildcats were just two points back in the standings of Stony Brook and eight shy of fellow Big Ten member Indiana. In addition to topping two teams that came into the meet with a higher ranking than NU in the Midwest Region in Nebraska and Kansas, the 'Cats also bested Big Ten foes Purdue, Ohio State and Illinois.
Twenty-fourth ranked Washington emerged to win the meet, holding off Vanderbilt, No. 14 Arizona and No. 1 Villanova, among others.
Crossing second for Northwestern with a personal-best 6K cross country time of 21:22 was sophomore Lexie Goldsmith. Senior Rachel Kaminski lowered her career best to 21:37 and was followed shortly after by junior Sophie Ewald in 21:39.
Sophomore Ann Powers was the fifth and final scorer for NU with her career-best time of 22:00, while juniors Ashley Greenwell and Lauren Neuschel also turned in strong performances with times of 22:04 and 22:23, respectively.
Five Wildcats competed in the event's B race where Molly Waterhouse
was NU's top finisher at 43rd overall with her time of 22:20. Sophomore Julia Buford
checked in at 22:35 and was followed by Michelle Moriset
(22:49), Janelle Li-A-Ping
(23:33) and Allegra Mayer
Two weeks remain before the Big Ten Championships on Oct. 30 but in the meantime, NU will send a contingent to next weekend's Illini Open. Start time is set for 4 p.m. on Friday.
