NORMAL, Ill. -- Northwestern followed up its overall team victory at the
season-opening Badger Cross Country Classic with another strong outing Friday,
placing first out of 31 colleges and universities in the Illinois Intercollegiates event hosted by Illinois State. Sophomore Audrey Huth placed first overall in 17:35 while Sophie Ewald took second in 17:43.
By winning the meet outright, Northwestern also was atop the team standings in the University Division with 29 team points, besting Illinois State (55 points), Illinois (73), Eastern Illinois (103) and Bradley (107) in the top five.
"I was very proud of how our team put their efforts and priorities into following a race strategy because that definitely worked in our favor," said Northwestern head coach April Likhite. "Audrey's win was extremely impressive as was Sophie's close runner-up finish. Our depth this year is playing a powerful factor in our overall team score."
Two true freshmen, Michelle Moriset (18:07) and Ann Powers (18:13), were the next Wildcat scorers, taking seventh and eighth overall, respectively. Junior Abby Tracy was fifth for NU, crossing 18:41.
Northwestern's returns to Chicagoland for its next day of competition, the Loyola Lakefront Invitational at Montrose Harbor on Saturday, Oct. 2.
