EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern outside hitter Stephanie Holthus received a 2013 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America Honorable Mention, the organization announced Wednesday, December 18. This marks the second consecutive year that the Elgin, Ill., native has been recognized by the AVCA after claiming third team honors in 2012.

Holthus is the third member of the Wildcats, all-time, to earn multiple All-America designations. Sabel Moffett was named Honorable Mention in 2009 and to the Second Team in 2010. Patty Walsh collected All-America accolades in three straight campaigns from 1980-1982.

In recent weeks Holthus was also named AVCA All-North Region, All-Big Ten and Academic All-Big Ten.

"Stephanie had a terrific end to an unforgettable career," said Northwestern head coach Keylor Chan. "As a senior captain she was counted on to lead a young group every night and she really rose to that challenge and flourished in that role. Every team that we played knew how important she was to our team and did all they could to slow her down, but through all that she still performed at an elite level and had a tremendous season. She certainly left a lasting mark on the program and we're all better off for having been in her company."

Holthus finished her collegiate career as one of the most decorated student-athletes in program history. She leaves as Northwestern's all-time leader in kills with 1,797 and ranks sixth in program annals with 1,347 digs. Her 3.77 kills per set rank first in NU history. She started all 127 matches of her career for the Wildcats, including 32 this fall.

As a senior this season, Holthus led the Wildcats and ranked fourth in the Big Ten with 4.06 kills per set. Her career-high 503 kills marked only the fourth time in program history that anyone has eclipsed the 500-kill plateau. The captain's 19 service aces also marked a career-best output and her 344 digs were only four shy of a personal best in that category. Holthus tallied 20-or-more kills seven times this season and led the 'Cats with 18 double-double performances.

Holthus turned in several memorable performances in 2013, including during the Wildcat Classic in September. En route to earning tournament MVP honors, she averaged 6.18 kills per set and 4.13 digs per set in wins against South Florida, Miami (OH) and IUPUI. She notched a career-high 24 digs to go along with 27 kills against the Bulls and followed that performance by breaking the program record for kills in a three-set match with 24 in the nightcap against the RedHawks. Rightfully so, Holthus was named the Big Ten Player of the Week and the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week after those performances.

In addition to her work on the court, Holthus was recognized for her achievement off the floor, as well. Thus fall she was one of 30 national candidates for the 2013 Senior CLASS® Award, which honors student-athletes in the areas of competition, classroom, community and character.
