PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Northwestern junior outside hitter Stephanie Holthus has been named the Co-Big Ten Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon.
Holthus turned in a record-breaking performance on Friday, Nov. 16 against the Michigan Wolverines. The Burlington, Ill., native recorded a career-high 28 kills in a four-set win over the Wolverines and complemented that with 19 digs, four blocks and a pair of assists. She hit .404 on the night with only five errors on a match-high 57 attempts.
The outside hitter also posted a double-double with a team-best 11 kills and 12 digs on Saturday, Nov. 17 against the Michigan State Spartans. The performance marked the 17th double-double effort of the season from Holthus and the 24th time in 29 matches that she accumulated double-digit kills.
In two matches last week against Michigan and Michigan State, Holthus averaged 5.6 kills and 4.4 digs per set.
It is the third time in as many seasons that Holthus has won a weekly award from the Big Ten conference. As a sophomore, Holthus collected Big Ten Player of the Week accolades on Aug. 28, 2011 after being named MVP of the Utah Classic. She was also tabbed as the Freshman of the Week on Oct. 11, 2010.
Holthus is the second Wildcat to earn a weekly award this season. Fifth-year senior Madalyn Shalter collected back-to-back Setter of the Week honors on Sept. 10 and 17.
Holthus currently ranks 11th on Northwestern's all-time list with 1,250 kills and needs only 14 to move into the top 10. She also needs only 17 digs to reach 1,000 for her career and would become the 15th player in program history to achieve that feat.
Northwestern returns to the floor at Welsh-Ryan Arena one final time this season on Wednesday night, Nov. 21, when it takes on instate rival Illinois at 7 p.m. The Wildcats conclude the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 24 with a match at Nebraska in the only meeting between the Big Ten foes this season.
