EVANSTON, Ill.-- Northwestern opened the 2012 season with eight consecutive matches on the road, but the successful trip has finally come to an end and the squad will return home this weekend to host the 31st Wildcat Classic at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

The Wildcats, winners of their first eight matches, are off to their best start in 25 years. That 1987 team won nine in-a-row to open the season and 14 of its first 15 matches under head coach Jerry Angle. The last time that Northwestern put together a nine-match winning streak came in 2010 during a season that ended with an NCAA Tournament run.

Here are some additional Northwestern notes:

    Chan Collects 200th Win:
Saturday's 3-1 victory over the Yale Bulldogs was the 200th career win as a collegiate head coach for Northwestern's Keylor Chan. Chan owns 182 wins at Northwestern in 12-plus seasons and another 18 from his one season at Furman (1999). Only Jerry Angle, who led the 'Cats from 1978-93, has more wins in program history with 327.

    1K Club:
Stephanie Holthus is inching closer toward becoming only the 20th player in program history to reach the 1,000-kill mark. Entering the Wildcat Classic, Holthus owns 935 terminations, including 128 in eight matches this season. Janine Makar (1985-88) is Northwestern's all-time leader with 1,666 kills.

    McGreal Makes An Impact:
Sophomore Monica McGreal saw the floor in only three sets as a true freshman in 2011, but she has made the most of her opportunity to play this season. The Louisville, Ky., native was named to the Yale Invitational All-Tournament Team after averaging 3.45 kills per game and registering double-doubles in wins over Villanova and Yale. Against Villanova, McGreal posted an eye-popping line with a career-high 16 kills at a clip of .467 to go along with 10 digs and three blocks.

    Poll Presence:
The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) has taken notice of Northwestern's hot start. The Wildcats received votes in the weekly poll for the first time this season when the new edition was released Monday. In total, seven Big Ten teams are currently in the top 25, including three in the top 10 led by No. 1 Nebraska. In addition to Northwestern, one other team is receiving votes this week meaning nine total teams have been recognized by the pollsters.
