EVANSTON, Ill. -- On the heels of another outstanding effort over the weekend at the Yale Invitational, Northwestern fifth-year senior Madalyn Shalterhas been named the Big Ten Setter of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Shalter averaged 12.64 assists per set in wins against Brown, Villanova and Yale as she helped propel the Wildcats to their third tournament crown in as many weeks. The Ottawa, Ohio, native also added 3.36 digs per set, eight kills, four service aces and three blocks during the tournament.
Shalter turned in one of her best individual performances of the season in Saturday's 3-1 win against Yale. She handed out a season-high 54 assists, three shy of her career-best effort, as the 'Cats knocked off the reigning Ivy League champions. Shalter also added 16 digs and five kills at a clip of .714 (5 kills - 0 errors - 7 attempts).
Earlier Saturday, Shalter guided NU's offense to its most efficient attacking performance of the season versus Villanova; the Wildcats posted a season-high .326 hitting percentage in the victory. She tallied 46 assists, 13 digs and a service ace in that match.
Shalter is the only player in the Big Ten who is currently averaging more than 12 assists per set this season. Her mark of 12.10 helpers per frame leads the conference and ranks seventh in the NCAA this week. Shalter also ranks eighth in the league with 3.78 digs per set.
