EVANSTON, Ill.-- Northwestern will look to remain unbeaten in 2012 when it heads to the desert to face three opponents this weekend in the La Quinta Invitational. The Wildcats will take on Drake Friday evening, Aug. 31, before facing Cincinnati and New Mexico State on Saturday, Sept. 1.

NU opened the season with a pair of wins last weekend as it took home the Marquette Challenge championship. Head coach Keylor Chan's team knocked off both Bowling Green and the host Golden Eagles by the same 3-1 score. Preseason All-Big Ten honoree Stephanie Holthus averaged 3.25 kills per set and was named the tournament's MVP. The junior was joined on the Marquette Challenge All-Tournament team by a trio of Wildcats: senior setter Madalyn Shalter, senior libero Julie Chin and redshirt sophomore middle hitter, Katie Dutchman.

Shalter collected a career-high 22 digs in the season-opener vs. Bowling Green and handed out 11.38 assists per set in two matches. Dutchman had perhaps her best day as a Wildcat against Marquette when she recorded a career-high 16 kills at a personal-best clip of .727, good for 10th on NU's all-time single-match record list. Chin was steady throughout the weekend in the back row while averaging 3.88 digs per set.

    Chin Digging Up The Charts
Senior Julie Chin currently ranks 11th in NU history with 1,076 digs, only eight behind Lizzie Carlson (`02-'05), who is presently 10th with 1,083. Chin also has Carmen Burbach(`97-'00) in her sights this weekend. Burbach is currently ninth on the list with 1,117 digs.

    Tough Slate
Northwestern will face another formidable schedule in 2012. The Wildcats will play 13 matches against seven teams that were ranked in the preseason top 25 of the AVCA Division I coaches poll. Three of those teams - Nebraska (1), Penn State (4) and Purdue (7) - are all currently ranked in the top 10. Minnesota checks in at No. 16 this week, while Michigan is slotted 22nd. Two other teams on NU's schedule, Ohio State and Michigan State also received votes in this week's poll.

[Catching up with NU head coach Keylor Chan]

    Century Club
Fifth-year senior Madalyn Shalter has appeared in 98 career matches for the Wildcats and barring any unforeseen circumstances, is scheduled to play in her 100th career match on Saturday against Cincinnati. Shalter appeared in nine matches in 2009 before undergoing season-ending ankle surgery. The Ottawa, Ohio, native was granted a medical hardship waiver by the NCAA that year. Senior Julie Chin ranks second on the active roster with 80 matches played and junior Stephanie Holthusranks third with 66.
