EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern Volleyball standout Stephanie Holthus has been chosen as one of 30 candidates for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award ®. The honor is presented annually to an NCAA Division I senior who has compiled notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.
Holthus makes the Evanston community a better place to be in several ways. The senior happily signs autographs for young fans after every home match and often helps to lead volleyball skill clinics for players ranging from kindergarten through eighth grade. She has also been active in National Girls and Women in Sports Day by serving as a guest speaker at NU's roundtable event and as an ambassador in promoting the event on campus in television interviews around Chicagoland.
In the classroom, Holthus has shown as much dedication as she does on the volleyball court. The senior is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree. She is a secondary teaching major and is pursuing a minor in history.
The two-time team captain of the Wildcats consistently leads her team by example on the competition, in practice and in the weight room. Holthus is approachable and a hard worker who sets a great example for her teammates in all phases of preparation and execution.
Holthus' accomplishments on the court are second to none. Last season, the outside hitter garnered AVCA All-America, All-Mideast Region and All-Big Ten accolades. She was named the most valuable player in all four of Northwestern's nonconference tournaments as she rapidly climbed the ranks in NU's all-time record book. Holthus enters her final campaign with 1,294 kills, good for 10th on that list and 1,003 digs, enough to rank 15th in that category. The 2013 Preseason All-Big Ten honoree ranked third in the Big Ten with 4.27 kills per set in 2012 and registered 20-or-more kills on 10 occasions last season.
The 30 candidates will be sliced to 10 finalists midway through the regular season. A nationwide voting system will be employed to media, coaches and fans, who will come together to select the very brightest candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four categories of the Senior CLASS Award.
Holthus is one of five nominees from the Big Ten and one of 19 AVCA All-Americans. For a look at the complete list of the 2013 Senior CLASS Award candidates, please click here.
