EVANSTON, Ill. -- With the first match of the 2014 season just a month away, Northwestern head volleyball coach Keylor Chan has announced the addition of Joe Julkowski as an assistant coach for the Wildcats.
Julkowski comes to Evanston after spending the last two seasons on the bench as an assistant for the Northern Illinois. The Carol Stream, Ill., native helped the Huskies win 40 matches during his tenure and to the championship match at the 2012 Mid-American Conference tournament.
"We're excited to welcome Joe to the Northwestern volleyball family," said Chan. "He is one of the true rising talents in the game and we're fortunate that he'll be with the Wildcats moving forward. With the season just around the corner, Joe will help prepare our team for what we know can be a very successful year."
Julkowski played at Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wis. from 2006-10 when he dotted his name across the program's record book. He was a three-time National Collegiate Volleyball Federation (NCVF) All-America honoree, a four-time All-Wisconsin Volleyball Conference (WVC) performer and a two-time WVC MVP. The program's all-time leader in career kills and aces, Julkowski helped the Muskies win the 2008 NCVF Division I national championship and two additional appearances in the national finals (2007 and 2010).
Julkowski also began his coaching career at Lakeland in 2011 as a graduate assistant. The following season Julkowski was elevated to head coach of the Muskies. He led the program to 22 wins and an appearance in the NCVF quarterfinals.
I am very excited to join the Wildcat family," said Julkowski. "The change has already been an amazing experience; I am looking forward to working with the team and the entire coaching staff.
"Keylor [Chan] and Kirstine [Jensen] are the two that drew me to the program because I've learned that they are people of high character as well as amazing coaches. Our coaching philosophies seem to be very similar, and I am anxious to bring some new ideas to the program, while learning a great deal from them. In addition to the staff, I am elated to learn more about the team and even more enthusiastic about getting into the gym to start training," added Julkowski.
Julkowski graduated from Lakeland in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. He prepped at Glenbard North High School.
The Wildcats begin the 2014 campaign in a place familiar to Julkowski. Northwestern lifts the lid on the 2014 campaign against Colorado on Friday, August 29 at the NIU Invitational in DeKalb, Ill. The 'Cats will also play both Presbyterian and NIU to conclude the tournament on August 30.
