2010 Northwestern Volleyball Schedule
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern head volleyball coach Keylor Chan today announced the Wildcats' 2010 schedule. It will be another challenging slate for the Wildcats, as in addition to the 20-match Big Ten slate, Northwestern will face eight opponents which qualified for the 2009 NCAA tournament.
"2010 will be challenging from the beginning to the end," said Chan. "Each time we step onto the court we will need to be playing our very best. The Big Ten might just be the deepest conference in the nation in 2010, and our non-conference consists of a handful of teams that will challenge to qualify for the NCAA tournament. We are looking forward to the 2010 season and believe we have an opportunity to be very, very good this year."
Northwestern opens up the 2010 campaign in the Chicago Challenge, hosted by DePaul. The Wildcats face North Shore rival Loyola (Chicago) in the season opener, then take on either the Blue Demons or Illinois-Chicago the following night.
Up next is the first of two home tournaments for Chan's Wildcats, hosting the Northwestern Challenge the first weekend in September and welcoming Mississippi, Morehead State and Utah to Evanston. The Wildcats then embark on their first true road trip of the year, heading to Athens, Ohio, for the Baymont Inn Suites Invitational where they will face Tennessee, Pittsburgh and Ohio.
Northwestern closes out the non-conference portion of its schedule by returning to Welsh-Ryan Arena to host the 29th annual Wildcat Classic. Charlotte, Harvard and Marquette make the trip to Evanston for the two-day tournament on Sept. 17 and 18.
The Wildcats then begin the challenging Big Ten schedule at home facing Indiana and Purdue. Volleyball fans will get the chance to see each of the remaining 10 Big Ten opponents as Iowa and Minnesota make the trip to Evanston on Oct. 8 and 10. Ohio State and three-time defending national champion Penn State make their yearly trips to Welsh-Ryan Arena at the end of October.
Northwestern opens up November with rivalry weekend, hosting Illinois and Wisconsin on November 5th and 6th. After a four-game road swing, the Wildcats close out the 2010 season at home facing Michigan and Michigan State, both of which qualified for the 2009 NCAA tournament.
The Wildcats return five starters and 10 letterwinners from last year's 16-16 campaign and sixth-place Big Ten finish, including AVCA honorable mention All-American and U.S. National A2 Team member Sabel Moffett (Temecula, Calif./Chapparal) at middle blocker. Seniors Elyse Glab (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection), Brittani Gray (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) and Naomi Johnson (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) also return with the goal of leading Northwestern back to the NCAA tournament.
