EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern head volleyball coach Keylor Chan announced the addition of Savannah Paffen to the Wildcats roster for the 2012 campaign Thursday. Paffen played her first collegiate season for the Pac-12 conference's Oregon Ducks.
Paffen, a 6-foot-2 middle blocker from Mountain View, Calif., spent the 2011 season as a member of the Ducks. Paffen and her Oregon teammates went 21-10 last year and secured a berth in the NCAA Tournament. She appeared in 53 games overall as a freshman, collecting 45 kills and 35 blocks. In Pac-12 matches, Paffen tallied 29 blocks in 40 games played.
"We are excited to welcome Savannah into our Northwestern volleyball family," said Chan. "Along with the Big Ten, the Pac-12 is one of the premier collegiate volleyball conferences in the country. Her experience against the top competition every single night will be a great asset for our team in the years ahead.
"Not only is Savannah a great talent on the court, but she is a tremendous student in the classroom," added Chan. "She encompasses so many of the values that our program is built upon and we are thrilled to welcome her to Evanston."
As a prep player, Paffen helped her St. Francis High School team to a California state championship in 2010. A co-captain, she earned First Team All-League honors as a senior and Second Team plaudits as a junior in 2009. Paffen is also a standout in the classroom. In high school, she boasted a 3.8 GPA and was recognized as a four-year scholar-athlete at St. Francis.
Paffen joins incoming freshmen Christine Janci and Abbie Kraus as the three additions to the Northwestern roster for next season. The trio will team up with eight returning letterwinners from last year's squad to represent the 'Cats in 2012.
