EVANSTON, Ill. -- In just over two weeks, the Northwestern Wildcats will embark upon a 10-day journey to Europe that will take them from Austria, to Slovenia and finally Italy to face a host of international competition and experience the culture in those foreign lands.
The trip marks the second international excursion for the Wildcats under the direction of head coach Keylor Chan. In 2009 the team took a spring break trip to Italy with stops in Venice, Milan, Florence and Rome. None of the student-athletes on Northwestern's current roster were apart of the program at that time.
This time around, Northwestern's travel party will leave Chicago on Friday, June 14 and touch down in Vienna, Austria on Saturday, June 15. The Cats will then head to Maribor, Slovenia for their first match of the trip against a club team before dining on top of a mountain after the competition.
On Monday, June 17, NU will enjoy a day of sightseeing in Maribor before taking on the Slovenian National Team. The group is scheduled to travel to Bovec, Slovenia the following day for more adventure and another match against a talented Slovenian club team.
The Italian leg of the tour begins on Wednesday, June 19 when the Wildcats depart Bovec to spend the morning and early afternoon in Venice, Italy before reaching Milan, Italy where they will take on under-23 team that will represent Italy at the prestigious Eltsin Cup.
June 20 is a day set aside exclusively for sightseeing. Northwestern's contingent will drive to Cinque Terra to hike as many of the cities as possible. The following day the group will travel via train to Rome where it will play a final match on June 22.
The Wildcats will depart Rome for Chicago on Sunday, June 23. Stay tuned to NUsports.com for daily updates throughout the trip.
