EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern head volleyball coach Keylor Chan filled a vacancy on his coaching staff by naming Scott Leserman as an assistant coach Monday. Leserman will not travel far to join the Wildcats, having most recently spent time on the bench as an assistant at nearby Loyola University Chicago.
"Scott will be tremendous addition to our Wildcat volleyball family," said Chan. "His experience as both an assistant coach and a former player will help everyone associated with our program push one another to be the very best they can be."
Leserman spent the 2011 campaign as an assistant under head coach Chris Muscat at Loyola. Under Leserman's tutelage, Rambler Laura Purcell led the team in kills and was named to the All-Horizon League Newcomer Team. The Loyola volleyball team also had one student-athlete named to the Horizon League All-Academic Team.
Prior to coming to Chicago, Leserman spent two seasons in downstate Champaign, Ill. as a graduate manager and volunteer assistant coach for Illinois. There, he gained valuable experience in the areas of scouting, film exchange and training in practice sessions. In 2010, the Manhattan Beach, Calif., native helped guide the Fighting Illini to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament before losing to Texas in a five-set thriller that round.
"The experience that Scott has coaching within our conference is essential," said Chan. "Though he spent last season with an up-and-coming Loyola team in the Horizon League, he is not far removed from the Big Ten, arguably the best collegiate volleyball conference in the country."
"I am thrilled to be joining the Northwestern program," said Leserman. "The school has a proud tradition in both academics and athletics and I am honored that Coach Chan has brought me in to be part of that history.
"The future is very bright for the Wildcats," added Leserman. "My hope is that I can help them to take that next important step in their careers, both on and off the volleyball court."
Leserman had a wildly successful four-year run as a student-athlete at Vassar College prior to entering the coaching ranks. A three-year captain, he helped the Brewers to a second-place finish in NCAA Division III tournament in 2008, the Molten Invitational Tournament. Leserman, whose name is scattered throughout the record book at Vassar, led Division III in digs per set as a senior and achieved American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Second Team All-America status.
Leserman graduated from Vassar with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics in 2009. In 2010, the Californian earned a Master's in Sport Management from Illinois.
