EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern volleyball will begin their 2013 season a little early with a whirlwind weeklong tour of Austria, Slovenia and Italy this June at the end of the academic year.

Once the academic year concludes, the `Cats will begin a journey upon which they will visit six cities in three different countries and play five competitive matches during a European tour. Northwestern's squad will polish their skills against tough competition such as the Slovenian Senior National Team, several Slovenian club teams and the Italian U23 team that will represent that nation in the Yeltsin Cup.

Northwestern's traveling party will begin the trip in Vienna on June 16 and then travel to Maribor, the second largest city in Slovenia. Along with playing a match against the Slovenian Senior National Team, the `Cats will sightsee, visit Maribor and enjoy dinner on top of the Mariborsko Pohorje mountain.

The Wildcats will then venture to Bovec, Slovenia to challenge a Slovenian club team and raft on the Soča river. The European adventure will continue as the `Cats travel to Venice, Italy to sightsee, followed by a quick trip to Milan to face the Italian U23 Team.

The `Cats will then explore Cinque Terra, a region of five villages along the coast of the Italian Rivera, and hike the picturesque hillsides. To close the tour, the Wildcats will travel to Rome to sightsee and play their last match.

"This European trip presents an amazing opportunity for our program," said Northwestern head coach Keylor Chan. "Not only will the team get to train together and compete against world-class competition, but we'll also be able to see parts of the world that we may otherwise be unable to discover."
