EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern head volleyball coach Keylor Chan announced the addition of a pair of defensive specialists to the Wildcats roster Wednesday. Chicago, native Christine Janci and Vestavia Hills, Ala., product Abbie Kraus will each begin their collegiate careers at NU in the fall.
Janci is a two-time All-Girls Catholic Athletic Conference (GCAC) selection and a two-time team MVP from Resurrection H.S. in Chicago. She helped to guide the Bandits to a GCAC Regional Championship in 2010 and she eclipsed the century mark in both digs and kills during her senior season. Janci has also been a member of the Wildcat Juniors volleyball club for two years, where she has been coached by future teammates and current 'Cats Stephanie Holthus and Maggie Burnham.
In the classroom Janci racked up numerous accolades as well. A member of the National Honor Society and an Illinois State Scholar, the Chicagoan has been on the honor roll for all four years of her high school tenure. Janci is also a member of the Student Council and has served at Resurrection as a mentor and peer tutor.
Kraus is a three-time letterwinner from Vestavia Hills H.S. in Alabama. The defensive specialist had a terrific senior season in which she totaled over 600 digs and more than 90 service aces for her team. She was tabbed the Birmingham News South Player of the Year and she helped lead the Rebels to the round of 16 in the AHSAA Class 6A state tournament. Kraus was also named to the 2011 Birmingham News All-State team and the Alabama Volleyball Coaches All-State squad. She is also a member of the National Honor Society and the National Latin Honor Society.
Kraus is no stranger to Evanston or athletic success. Abbie's older sister, Alex, swam at Northwestern from 2007-2011 and captained the team during her senior season. Her father, Thomas, played football for both Purdue and Miami (Ohio).
The two newest Wildcats join nine returning letterwinners from the 2011 team on the roster for the upcoming season. Northwestern finished the campaign with 16 wins overall, including three over top-25 opponents. The year was punctuated with a 3-1 victory over 2nd-ranked Nebraska to conclude the regular season on November 26.
