EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern libero Caroline Niedospial has been selected by USA Volleyball as one of 12 players who will compete as the U.S. Collegiate National Team during a European tour scheduled for this summer.

Niedospial is one of two liberos on the roster and one of four players with Big Ten ties. The team will be coached by UCLA head coach Mike Sealy with assistance from Jenny Glenn, the associate head coach at Northern Colorado, and Kyle Robinson, head coach of Long Island University. The team was selected based on performance at the U.S. Women's National Team open tryouts that were held Feb. 21-23 in Colorado Springs, Colo.

"We are all very excited that 'Carks' [Niedospial's nickname] has been selected among such a prestigious group of volleyball players from across the country," said Northwestern head coach Keylor Chan. "During our team's tour last summer she really stood out as one of the most consistent performers and that translated well into an outstanding fall season for her. For Carks to be added to this tremendous roster is an outstanding accomplishment. She has shown that she can compete at the highest level and I have no doubt that will continue to do so on this journey."

The U.S. Collegiate National Team will depart for Venice, Italy on July 8 before trekking to Maribor, Slovenia for a four-day training camp. Niedospial, a redshirt junior in 2014, and her teammates will be training and playing scrimmages against the likes of the Slovenian National Team and several Under-20 National Teams in the same gymnasium where the Wildcats played three matches during their tour in June 2013.

Upon leaving Maribor, the squad will travel to Pula, Croatia, where it will compete in the Global Challenge, July 13-18.

Niedospial turned in a strong performance in her first full season as Northwestern's libero in 2013. After missing all of 2012 and receiving a medical redshirt, the Chicagoan led the 'Cats and ranked second in the Big Ten with 4.46 digs per set. She played in all 124 games and recorded 20-or-more digs 12 times. Niedospial posted a career-high 29 digs at Minnesota on 10/27/13.

Northwestern begins its spring schedule on Saturday, April 5 with a trip to take on the Michigan Wolverines. The 'Cats will host a four-team tournament on April 12 and also host Notre Dame and Valparaiso in scrimmages later in the month.
