EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern head volleyball coach Keylor Chan released the team's 2013 spring schedule on Tuesday. The Wildcats will compete in a pair of competitive scrimmages against two of the top teams in the region and host a one-day tournament with more local competition.

The spring season begins on Thursday, March 7 when Northwestern travels to South Bend, Ind. to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish for a scrimmage. The Irish finished the 2012 campaign with a 20-10 record and earned a trip to the NCAA tournament, but bowed out in the first round against another Big Ten foe, Ohio State. The scrimmage will take place at 6 p.m.

The `Cats then will continue practicing for a little over a month before hitting the road for another scrimmage on Thursday, April 11. Northwestern will play at Marquette, a familiar opponent who the Wildcats met in the spring last season and again in the fall. The Golden Eagles had a tremendous 2012 season, posting a 27-7 mark. One of those seven losses came at the hands of the Wildcats on Aug. 26 last season. Play in Milwaukee, Wis. is slated to begin at 6 p.m.

On Saturday, April 20, NU will play host to a one-day tournament featuring Loyola-Chicago and Northern Illinois. Loyola worked its way to a 17-12 record in 2012, while NIU earned a 21-15 mark, falling to Bowling Green, 3-2, in the MAC Championship. The tournament will be held at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

"We're working hard in the gym and training on a lot of individual skills right now," said Chan. "It's helpful to put together what each individual is working on and incorporate that into the team systems. The chance to play against other great teams is a valuable tool for us in that process."

Northwestern is looking to build off a promising 2012 season that saw the `Cats go 16-15, including a school-record 11 straight victories to start the year. The Wildcats were very good away from home, winning 11 matches, including six on an opponent's home floor. The season was highlighted by upset wins at No. 25 Michigan State on Oct. 12 and against a Michigan squad that advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament.
