    Wildcat Volleyball Defeats Iowa in Five Games

    Renius Ties NU Single-Match Assist Record

    EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern volleyball team got back into the win column with an exciting five-game win over Iowa Saturday night in Welsh-Ryan Arena, 15-13, 9-15, 15-9, 14-16, 15-10. NU impoves to 12-15 overall, 3-13 Big Ten. Iowa falls to 9-18 overall and last place in the conference at 2-14.

    For the match, NU collected 106 kills to just 79 for Iowa, and outdug the Hawkeyes, 90-74. The Wildcats showed a balanced offensive attack Saturday night as five of NU's six starters registered double-figure kill and dig totals. Jessica Holloway had a team-high 27 kills with 18 digs, Carmen Burbach had 23 kills and 17 digs, Leah Ackerman had 18 kills and 11 digs, Sharon Fisk posted 17 kills and 11 digs, and Melissa Doan had 12 kills and 12 digs.

    The sixth starter, setter Liz Renius, had a team-high 20 digs and 83 assists. Her 83 assists ties the Northwestern single-match record set by Andrea Proos against Michigan State in 1986. Renius also tallied eight kills in the win.

    NU sweeps the season series against Iowa, the first time the 'Cats have swept a season series in the Big Ten since 1993, when NU also swept the Hawkeyes. The Wildcats are back in action on Nov. 21-22 at #2 Penn State and Indiana.
