EVANSTON, Ill. -- Michigan State came in to Welsh-Ryan Arena looking to avenge an earlier loss to Northwestern this season and it did just that with a straight-set victory Saturday night, 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-15).

The Wildcats struggled to stay in system all night long. The Spartans were able to sideout Northwestern at a clip of 66 percent for the match, including at a rate of 86 percent in the third frame.

The first set was the tightest of the night, featuring eight tie scores and three lead changes, both match highs. The score was even at 16-16 just over midway through when MSU ripped three points in a row to take the lead for good.

Northwestern never led in the second set as Michigan State won it, 25-17. The Wildcats trailed by as many as 10 points in the stanza, but fought back to within five. In the end, the Spartans had too much firepower to overcome.

The 'Cats evened the third set, 9-9, on a kill from Stephanie Holthus before another Spartan run created some distance. MSU went on to win the third set, 25-15.

Holthus paced the Wildcats offensively with 11 kills and added a team-best 12 digs in the match. Michigan's State's Lauren Wicinski led all players with 15 kills in victory.

Northwestern will play its final home game of the 2012 campaign on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. against instate rival, Illinois. Arrive early because prior to the match graduating seniors Madalyn Shalter and Julie Chin will be honored for their contributions over the past five and four seasons, respectively.
