Northwestern wasn't able to sweep their Big Ten weekend after falling to conference leader Penn State in four games (29-31, 30-24, 22-30, 27-30). With the loss, the Wildcats are now 11-7 overall and 2-4 in league play.

"I give Penn State credit for being more consistent," said head coach Keylor Chan. "We were tentative when we should have been aggressive, particularly in games one and four."

NU controlled much of game one, taking a 9-0 lead with Lizzie Carlson (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) serving. Penn State rebounded and battled with the Wildcats to eventually take the game 31-29.

Northwestern came fighting back in game two thanks in part to Iwona Lodzik's (Tarnobrzeg, Poland/Tarnobrzeg) five service aces. She had seven in the match, which shattered her previous match-high of five. Erika Lange (Orland Park, Ill/Carl Sandburg) and Jill Buschur (New Bremen, Ohio/New Bremen) dominated the game with a .600 and .556 hitting percentage, respectively. NU convincingly took the game 30-24.

Penn State responded in the final games, holding a .308 to .073 advantage in hitting percentage over Northwestern in the third. Though the Wildcats were pressing late in the fourth, the Nittany Lions were able to hold on for their 16th victory of the season.

Lodzik led the team with 21 digs in the match, Lange had three block assists and one solo, while the Wildcats had a combined .160 hitting percentage. The Nittany Lions countered with 12 team blocks and a .242 hitting percentage.

"When we stray from the game plan, we dig ourselves into a hole that we can't get out of. That will be on our minds as we prepare for next weekend."

NU travels to Michigan and Michigan State next Friday and Saturday. Game times are scheduled for 7 p.m. both nights.
