EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 4 Penn State proved it is not only among the elite in the Big Ten, but the entire nation Friday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena in a 3-0 sweep of Northwestern, 30-14, 30-21, 30-16.

With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 10-5 on the season, 1-4 in the Big Ten. Penn State improves to 14-2 overall, 5-0 in the conference.

The Nittany Lions wasted no time proving they deserve their ranking in the first game, jumping out to a 5-0 lead and never looking back in a 30-14 win.

The Wildcats were able to reel off three consecutive points late in the game, sparked by a pair of kills from freshman Chelsy Hyser (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere).

Northwestern opened up a 3-0 lead of its own in the second game, and held that advantage until Penn State was able to tie the score, 10-10. The Nittany Lions again gradually pulled away until they eventually won the second game, 30-21.

Game three saw Penn State blast out to a 17-5 lead en route to a 30-16 win. Though they were down by 15 at the first match point, the Wildcats gutted out a pair of intense volleys to earn points on an attack error and a Lindsay Anderson (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) kill before the end of the match.

Anderson led the 'Cats with 11 kills, while Hyser killed a career-high five balls and hit .375. Senior Christie Gardner (West Bend, Wis./West Bend East) led NU with 11 digs.

Northwestern returns to action at 7 p.m. tomorrow night at Welsh-Ryan Arena when it hosts No. 18 Ohio State.
