MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Big Ten win No. 1 will have to wait for the Northwestern Wildcats as they fell to Minnesota 3-0 (34-32, 30-26, 34-32) on Friday night at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion. NU is now 9-6 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

Northwestern and Minnesota were even through game one, with the Wildcats holding three more total kills than the Gophers. Junior outside hitter Jill Buschur (New Bremen, Ohio/New Bremen) took the 'Cats on an early three-point run for the 4-2 lead, but Minnesota answered with Trisha Brantford serving four quick points. Northwestern pulled ahead at 9-8 and tied the game a total of eleven times, forcing four game points, only to lose a heartbreaker by the score of 34-32. Erika Lange (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) led the 'Cats with six kills and a .365 hitting percentage in the game.

Minnesota pulled ahead early in game two, up 6-2 at one point, with the Wildcats pulling even at 11. Though NU held brief leads throughout the game and both teams were battling for the win late, the Golden Gophers pulled away with a four-point run and took the game 30-26. Lange and Christie Gardner (West Bend, Wis./West Bend East) led their team with a .429 and .375 hitting percentage, respectively. Erica Knavel (Elm Grove, Wis./Brookfield East) added four digs.

The 'Cats came back and pushed Minnesota in game three, only to fall again by the score of 34-32. Drew Robertson (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) added six digs to her nine assists in the game, bringing her assists total to 38 in the match.

"We competed throughout but mental mistakes late in each game cost us," said head coach Keylor Chan. "We are a little better than we were last week and we need to end the weekend with a win in Iowa."

NU will travel to Iowa City on Saturday for a 7 p.m. match. The match will be telecast on a tape-delay basis 3 p.m. Sunday on Fox Sports Chicago.
