    EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern opened up the home portion of its 2009 schedule with a bang, sweeping Akron 25-18, 25-17, 25-16 in its opening set of the 28th annual Wildcat Classic for its fourth-straight victory. The Wildcats improve to 7-3 on the year and have won seven of their last eight matches.

    Junior Sabel Moffett (Temecula, Calif./Chapparal) continued to be red hot at the nets for Northwestern, knocking down 11 kills on 17 attempts with just one error for a .588 hitting percentage. Moffett also had a match-high five blocks to lead the Wildcat attack. Junior Naomi Johnson (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) had nine kills for the 'Cats, with sophomore Madalyn Shalter (Ottawa, Ohio/Ottawa-Glandorf) adding six to go along with nine digs.

    Junior Elyse Glab (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) dished out 33 assists and three blocks, while senior Kate Nobilio (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) digging 10 Akron (7-5) attacks.

    Northwestern set the tone early in its home opener, pouncing out to an early 7-2 advantage on Akron in the opening set. The Wildcats would extend that advantage to eight at 18-10 before trading points with the Zips to close out the opening set. Johnson had four kills early for NU, with Moffett and Shalter adding three apiece in set one.

    Set two proved to be the most competitive of the match, with Akron building a 13-9 cushion on the 'Cats. But a 15-3 run by Northwestern tipped the scales in its favor, as the Wildcats built a comfortable 24-16 advantage, which was sealed by a kill from junior Brittani Gray (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore).

    Akron took the early lead in the third set as well, leading Northwestern 5-2 early. But a resurgent Wildcat squad used a 7-0 and a 12-5 run to put the match out of reach. Moffett led the charge, knocking down five kills on seven attempts with no errors while blocking three Zip attacks.

    Brionna Patterson was Akron's top player, finishing with a match-high 12 kills to go along with four digs and a service ace. Kara Smith had 23 assists for the Zips.

    Northwestern faces a challenging Saturday double-header at the Wildcat Classic, facing a pair of 2008 NCAA tournament team. The Wildcats meet up with Long Island at noon, followed by a showdown with Cincinnati at 7 p.m. The Bearcats defeated the Blackbirds 3-0 in the first match of the classic. Both matches will be streamed live at, with Gametracker live stats available as well.
