EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern hosted a volleyball exhibition match against Dabrowa Gornicza, a Polish professional team, at Welsh Ryan Arena Monday night and competed well for the final two sets before Dabrowa pulled out a 3-1 win. The Polish visitors won the match by scores of 25-17, 25-17, 22-25, 24-26.

All six Wildcat freshmen saw playing time Monday as head coach Keylor Chan tried out several different lineups while resting regular starters Katie Dutchman and Caroline Niedospial.

"Tonight was a great chance for us to build on our trip to Europe this past summer," said NU head coach Keylor Chan. "It was also a great opportunity to get us in match situations with a high-caliber opponent. We really enjoyed sharing the court with Tauron MKS Dabrowa Gornicza and we'll use this match to build on moving forward."

Junior outside hitter Yewande Akanbi led the way for the 'Cats with 18 kills. Freshman outside hitter Rafae Strobos added seven kills and junior Savannah Paffen and redshirt sophomore Maggie Burnham contributed three apiece.

Freshman setter Caleigh Ryan had 20 assists for the Wildcats. Sophomore Abbie Kraus totaled 13 digs, while junior Monica McGreal finished with nine.

The `Cats outblocked the Polish squad 14-10, thanks in part to redshirt sophomore Burnham's match-best nine blocks. Akanbi and freshman Maddie Slater added four blocks apiece.

Northwestern will bid aloha to the mainland as they head west this week to the 50th state for the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Volleyball Challenge in Honolulu, Hawai'i. The Wildcats will face Arizona on Thursday, Sept. 12 followed by a showdown with No. 10 Hawai'i on Sept. 13 and the finale versus Portland State on Sept. 14.
