2009 ITA National Singles Championship participant list
EVANSTON, Ill. — As Northwestern’s individual fall season winds down, the ’Cats will have representatives competing for championships on opposite ends of the continent this weekend. Junior Maria Mosolova is one of 32 players from around the country playing in the ITA National Indoor Singles Championship in New Haven, Conn., while the remainder of the NU squad heads to the Duals in the Desert in Palm Springs, Calif.
Mosolova, the top-ranked singles player in the Campbell’s/ITA College Tennis poll, was a semifinalist at the 2008 edition of the national singles championship as well as a quarterfinalist in each of the last two NCAA Singles Championships held in the spring.
The NU junior is 8-2 this fall following her singles title run at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships. The ITA will be providing live scoring and results on its official tournament Web page.
On the West Coast, the Wildcats will meet other top programs—including Georgia Tech, UCLA, Southern California and Texas—in singles and doubles competition at the Duals in the Desert at the Moore Tennis Academy. Senior and 89th-ranked Lauren Lui, who played well enough to reach the quarterfinals of last week’s ITA Midwest Regional Championship, took home a flight four title at last year’s Duals in the Desert.
The 2009 Duals in the Desert are set to take place Friday through Sunday and complete results will be made available on NUsports.com at the conclusion of play each day.
Following this weekend, Northwestern enjoys a two-month layoff between its fall and spring schedules, beginning again in earnest on Jan. 15, 2010, when it hosts the Wildcat Invitational. After that, the ’Cats begin defense of their 2009 ITA National Indoor Team Championship when they host qualifying round matches Jan. 30-31.
