KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Northwestern enjoyed a successful first day of the Bronco Invite hosted by Western Michigan University with six singles players advancing to the semifinals and two doubles teams reaching the finals. Freshman Lauren Lui (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) won two doubles matches and one singles match Friday. Play on Saturday begins at 10:30 a.m. with the doubles finals.
Lui and fellow Freshman Samantha Murray (Altrincham, Eng./Altrincham Grammar) defeated Western Michigan's Kerstin Pahl and Ashley Moccia 8-6 in the first round and took down Kaylan Caitai and Morgan Tutle of Wisconsin in the semifinals, 8-1.
The pair of sophomore Keri Robison (Decatur, Ill./Keystone National) and junior Alexis Conill (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) defeated Indiana's Fischer and Perton 8-3 in the first round, but fell to Noriko Saruta and Priyanka Parekh of Western Michigan in the semifinals, 8-6.
In a third doubles flight, the duo of freshman Suzie Matzenauer (Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine) and sophomore Nazlie Ghazal (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) bested Indiana's Marah Calvo and Erin Clark 8-4 in the first round and toppled Western Michigan's Carrie Jeanmaire and Emily Dudzik 8-6 in the semifinals.
In singles, Murray and Robison received byes to the semifinals of their flights. Ghazal defeated Noriko Saruta of Western Michigan in the first round 6-2, 6-0 while Lui downed Priyanka Parekh of WMU, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. Matzenauer outlasted Cecile Perton of Indiana in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 and Conill took down Wisconsin's Erin Jobe in three sets, 6-1, 6-7(2), 6-1.
