    Qualifying Singles Draw Day 1 Get Acrobat Reader

    EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's tennis team will spend an extended weekend in Ann Arbor, Mich., competing in the ITA Midwest Regional Championships hosted by the University of Michigan. The winners of each draw earn automatic bids to the ITA National Indoor Championships. The event, running from Oct. 10-15, will be held at Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center.

    A Northwestern player has won the singles event in 10 of the past 14 seasons. Kate Turvy is the most recent to do so, winning it last year.

    Belinda Niu and Veronica Corning enter the weekend nationally ranked in singles play. Niu starts play at No. 105, while Corning is placed at No. 111.

    Action is slated to begin Thursday morning at 9 a.m. with the qualifying singles first round. Winners of the qualifying rounds will advance to the main draw, expected to begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12. Singles and doubles main draws will run through Tuesday, Oct. 15.

    Three Wildcat freshmen will participate in the qualifying round held Thursday morning. Brooke Rischbieth and Maddie Lipp will begin in the first round, while Jillian Rooney earns a first-round bye.

    The `Cats are one of 23 teams participating in the regional championships. They will be joined by five other Big Ten programs, including Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State and Wisconsin.
