EVANSTON, Ill. -
Northwestern women's and men's tennis has both singles and doubles players represented in the newly released Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) preseason rankings.
The highest ranking for a Wildcat player is senior Kate Turvy (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) who is No. 12 in women's singles. A unanimous first-team All-Big Ten selection a year ago, Turvy is the second-highest ranked Big Ten player behind Michigan's Emina Bektas (No. 9).
Also earning rankings are senior Brittany Wowchuk (Toronto, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) who enters the year at No. 48, while junior Belinda Niu (Portland, Ore./Lincoln) comes in at No. 118.
In doubles, the team of junior Nida Hamilton (Oak Brook, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and senior Linda Abu Mushrefova (Bradenton, Fla./Pendleton) is ranked 10th in the nation. The pair reached the championship doubles match at the ITA Midwest Regional Championship and the semifinals at the ITA All-American Championships last season.
On the men's side, senior Spencer Wolf (Coral Springs, Fla./Laurel Springs) enters 2012-13 ranked No. 69 in singles. He was ranked as high as 97th last season when he posted an 18-13 overall singles record, including 14-10 in dual matches.
Northwestern is also represented in the doubles rankings as the team of Wolf and junior Raleigh Smith (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) enter at No. 42. Smith earned 15 doubles wins with Alex Pasareanu last season, while Wolf previously teamed with Josh Graves to post 12 victories.
Northwestern's women's team opens the season Sept. 29 at the ITA All-American Championships in Los Angeles while the men compete at the same event in Tulsa, Okla., beginning Oct. 1.
