EVANSTON, Ill. -
Northwestern Vice President for Athletics and Recreation Jim Phillips has announced the signing of head women's tennis coach Claire Pollard to a contract extension through 2020.
"What Northwestern women's tennis has been able to accomplish during Claire Pollard's 15 seasons as head coach is truly remarkable," Phillips said. "Her teams have excelled in the classroom and the community year in and year out and the program's consistent success under her leadership is unparalleled in the history of Big Ten women's tennis. To claim a conference title 15 straight seasons is an incredible feat. It is one thing to earn success with regularity, but Claire's teams have done it with class and she is as humble and as modest as they come despite her tremendous accomplishments. We are absolutely elated to have her continue to lead the program for many years to come."
"I am thrilled to continue my coaching career at Northwestern and really appreciate the trust Dr. Phillips and President Schapiro have shown in me," said Pollard. "We will continue our quest for excellence both in the classroom and on the courts while wearing our purple with pride. I look forward to many more years of hard work and satisfaction as a Wildcat and the leader of the women's tennis program."
During her time in Evanston, Pollard has developed Northwestern into the most consistent programs regardless of sport not only in the Big Ten but throughout the country. Under her leadership, the Wildcats have claimed a conference title in each of the last 15 seasons. NU claimed league regular-season titles each year from 1999-2009 and again in 2012 as well as Big Ten tournament titles every year from 1999-2011 and then again in 2013.
Northwestern has posted a 349-85 dual match record in Pollard's 15 seasons at the helm, including a remarkable 141-11 record against Big Ten foes during the regular season. NU has had 42 individual NCAA qualifiers, 10 ITA Midwest Regional singles champions, four ITA Midwest Regional doubles champions, 45 All-Big Ten honorees and 60 Academic All-Big Ten selections under Pollard.
Her squads have advanced to the NCAA tournament round of 16 for 10 consecutive seasons and 13 of 15 seasons overall during her tenure. The Wildcats have posted a final ITA team ranking in the top 20 each year since 2000, including eight top-10 finishes.
Northwestern became the first northern school to claim an ITA National Team Indoor Championship when it accomplished the feat in the fall of 2008 and then repeated the accomplishment the following year.
Pollard has been recognized as the Big Ten Coach of the Year and Wilson/ITA Midwest Region Coach of the Year five times each while being named the Wilson/ITA National Coach of the Year in 2008. Her players have earned eight Big Ten Player of the Year honors and six Big Ten Freshman of the Year awards.
