EVANSTON, Ill. - Former Northwestern women's tennis standout Samantha Murray will face a stiff test Tuesday when she takes the court for her second consecutive Wimbledon appearance.

Murray, who starred at NU from 2006-10, earned a wild card selection into the singles draw and will face fifth-seeded Maria Sharapova who is coming off a recent title at the French Open. Sharapova is the 2004 Wimbledon champion and the 2011 runner-up.

Murray is currently ranked No. 247 in the world. She qualified for the NCAA Singles Championship all four of her years at Northwestern and earn four All-Big Ten selections.

A native of Altrincham, England, Murray told British newspaper Express, "I will just go out and play my game. I have to go out there to win and try to take something from her.

"It is a big part of my game that I play aggressive tennis and I love playing on the grass. Coming forward this surface really suits me so I will have to try to attack her.

"It's the first round - I've just got to go out there and see what I can do."

Murray competed in both singles and doubles at last year's Wimbledon Championships, falling in the first round in both matches.

Visit late Monday for a schedule of when Tuesday's match between Murray and Sharapova will take place.
