    Northwestern Match Notes (PDF)

ATHENS, Ga. -- As a team, Northwestern concluded its run at the NCAA Championship last week, but three Wildcats will take to the courts at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex once again for the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships. The singles tournament begins Wednesday, May 23 and the doubles competition commences on Thursday, May 24.

Kate Turvy, a unanimous All-Big Ten first team selection, will open play at the NCAA Singles Championship on Wednesday, May 23 at 11:30 a.m. against Cal's Jana Juricova. Juricova is the sixth seed in the tournament and enters the competition as the defending national champion.

For the second straight year Northwestern will be represented in the NCAA Doubles Championship by the tandem of Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton. The Wildcats will face Florida's Lauren Embree and Joanna Mather in the first round on Thursday, May 24. The time of that match has not yet been announced.

Turvy has been a mainstay for the Wildcats at the No. 1 singles position all season. The Dublin, Ohio, native owns an overall record of 26-13 this year, including a mark of 16-9 in dual matches. Turvy, an at-large selection to the 64-player field, was 8-2 in Big Ten play and has nine wins over nationally ranked players this year.

The Northwestern junior has not faced Juricova this year, but if she advances she could come across many familiar faces throughout the tournament. Turvy has played 21 percent of the field during either the fall or spring and compiled a record of 8-6 in those matches. She is currently ranked No. 20 in the Campbell's/ITA singles poll.

Juricova is the eighth-ranked player in the country according to the latest singles poll, which was released on May 8. She is 27-6 overall this year and 10-2 in dual matches. Her California team was ousted in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship by UCLA on Saturday.

The Wildcats went on a terrific run last season at the event in Palo Alto, Calif., that culminated with an appearance in the quarterfinals and All-America status for both student-athletes. Top-ranked Juricova and her partner Mari Andersson from Cal ironically, eliminated Abu Mushrefova and Hamilton in the quarterfinal match, a year ago.

NU's duo played together on-and-off throughout the season for the betterment of the entire team. Abu Mushrefova and Hamilton are 15-9 together this season. In the fall the pair finished as runners-up to Notre Dame's Shannon Mathews and Kristy Frilling at the ITA Midwest Regional Championship. They also advanced to the semifinals of both the ITA All-American Championships and the ITA National Indoor Championships. They are currently ranked No. 28, while their opponents from Florida check in at No. 22.

Embree and Mather are 27-3 together this season entering Tuesday's NCAA Team Championship final against UCLA.

The singles tournament, which features 64 student-athletes from around the country, runs May 23-28. The 32-team doubles competition begins one day later on May 24, but also concludes on Memorial Day, May 28.
