EVANSTON, Ill. -- After enjoying home cooking in Evanston for the first two rounds of the NCAA Championships, the fifth-seeded Wildcats are set to take in some southern hospitality when they travel to the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., for the rest of this year's championships. NU faces 12th-seeded UCLA in the round of 16 at 8 a.m. CT Friday.
Last Time Out
The Wildcats advanced out of the Evanston Regional with wins over Western Michigan and Indiana last weekend. Under overcast skies and intense winds, the 'Cats defeated Western Michigan in the first round, 4-0. Senior Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) captured the clincher with a three-setter at No. 3 singles.
NU took the doubles point and used three straight-set singles wins to defeated 24th-ranked Indiana Saturday. Freshman Lauren Lui (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) extended her winning streak to 12 when she captured the clincher at No. 4 and sophomore Nazlie Ghazal (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) won her team-best 14th-straight match with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 5.
Last Time Against UCLA
NU captured the doubles point and used singles wins by Lui, Ghazal, Georgia Rose (Mettawa, Ill./North Shore Country Day) and Samantha Murray (Altrincham, England/Altrincham Grammar) to defeat UCLA in the first round of the ITA Indoor Championships, 5-2. Rose clinched the dual for the Wildcats with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 win over the Bruins' Riza Zalameda.
Wildcat Winning Streaks
Ghazal is currently on a 14-match winning streak. Right on her heels is Lui, who has won her last 12 singles contests. Suzie Matzenauer (Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine) has won her last seven matches. In doubles, Murray and Alexis Conill (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) have won their last nine matches at No. 3. As a team, NU has won its last 14 duals dating back to a 7-0 win over Illinois on 3/31.
Ghazal Getting It Done
Nazlie Ghazal has anchored the bottom of the Wildcats' lineup all season. The California native owns a 23-4 dual record and has won her last 14 singles matches. The sophomore is 10-2 at No. 5 and 12-2 at No. 6 and during her winning streak, has given up three games or less in 24 sets and has posted nine perfect frames. In her 23 wins, four have been of the 6-0, 6-0 variety.
Wildcats in the Individual Tournaments
Prousis will look to become NU's first two-time NCAA doubles champion as the senior and Rose, the nation's ninth-ranked doubles team, received a bid to the 2007 NCAA Women's Tennis Championships doubles competition. Rose and Murray will both compete in the singles bracket. The singles and doubles competitions will run from May 23-28 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
