EVANSTON, Ill. -
Vandy Christie Tennis Center, the outdoor home of the Northwestern men's and women's tennis programs, has received a number of upgrades this season thanks to a generous donation from Chris and Courtney Combe.
The Combes were recently honored at a banquet for the programs on May 2 as well as at an official dedication ceremony two days later.
The donation from the Combe family includes a main scoreboard, six individual scoreboards (one for each court), and six new 27-foot long bleachers that are three rows deep with chairbacks.
"The generosity of the Combes has elevated our program to a whole new level," Northwestern head women's tennis coach Claire Pollard said. "I used to avoid coming to the outdoor courts with recruits and now that will be the first place that we go. After all, tennis is an outdoor sport and we work really hard to get out here. It's such a great venue now. It's really intimate and you get a feel of the whole college experience with having the scoreboards and the seating. It has elevated the facility to a different place."
"We're all so appreciative of the support that Chris and Courtney have shown for our programs," said Wildcat head men's tennis coach Arvid Swan. "The scoreboards and the chairback seating makes our facility one of the best indoor/outdoor combinations in college tennis. We can't thank the Combes enough for their support with both of our facilities. To be able to play in a first-class facility is such an advantage for our program and our players, as well as from a recruiting standpoint."
The indoor tennis facility, Combe Tennis Center, is named after former Northwestern tennis player Ivan Combe, who offered the lead donation for the facility and was a member of NU's men's tennis team from 1931-33 and played on legendary Wildcat coach Paul Bennett's first team.
